Attack on journalist : Court sets February 18 to begin trial of NPP sympathizer who assaulted Latif Iddrisu

A circuit court in Accra has set February 18 2026, to commence the trial of Theophilus Thompson, a sympathiser of the New Patriotic Party.


The accused person teamed up with other supporters of the opposition party to assault Multimedia journalist Latif Iddrisu in May last year at the Economic and Organised Crime Office.


The journalist was assaulted in line of duty during a live broadcast and reporting about the arrest and interrogation of the Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wuntumi by EOCO.


The accused person and other attackers, who are still on the run, charged at the journalist and assaulted him live on prime time television when the journalist reported about an attack on a police pickup truck by some of the supporters of the New Patriotic Party who had massed up at the entrance of the Economic and Organised Crime Office in Accra.


The police declared the suspects wanted and launched a manhunt almost immediately, leading to the arrest of Theophilus Thompson at his hideout in Jamestown, a suburb of Accra. The other suspects are still on the run.
Theophilus Thompson was remanded into police custody after he pleaded not guilty in court on Monday, 9 June 2025.


He is currently on a fifty-thousand-Ghana-cedis GHS 50,000.00 bail. Parties to the case rounded up the Case Management Conference on Monday, January 19 202,6 following which the judge, His Honour Kwabena Kodua Obiri-Yeboah, set February 18, 19, 25 and 26 for commencement of the trial.
